Bar/Bat Mitzvah at Magen Avraham

Our Bar/Bat Mitzvah class meets bi-weekly over a four month period. In preparation for the big day, each student studies his Haftorah and Maftir, including the blessings that come before and after the reading. Some choose to read extra portions from the Torah, as well.  They are also trained to lead 'Kabbalat Shabbat', 'Maariv', 'Shacharit' and 'Mussaf' services on the Shabbat of their Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
All this is accompanied by in-depth studies, both in groups and individually, led by rabbinical students from the Schechter Institute in Jerusalem. The Bar/Bat Mitzvah students learn about Judaism, about prayers and the prayer book, the synagogue, the Tallit and Tefillin, the meaning of Bar/Bat Mitzvah , about Shabbat and about the various movements of Judaism .

Our Rabbi Dikla Drukman-Shertzer meets each student and helps him/her write their Dvar Torah.

Dr. Ed Spitz, a member of our congregation, volunteers to teach the children how to chant  the Haftorah and Torah.

Family members of the students in the course are invited to attend some of the classroom sessions, prepare and partake in a group traditional Friday night dinner and go on a trip to Jerusalem to tour and to pray at the Western Wall.
Many of our graduates return to Congregation Magen Avraham when their own children reach the age of Bar/Bat Mitzvah.

With the use of a new website that we have created, children from abroad can study at their homes and  celebrate their Bar/Bat Mitzvah in Israel at Congregation Magen Avraham. It is a moving experience for the family and their guests and our members. Press on the link to enter our Bar/Bat Mitzvah training website .
